Mardi Gras Season Has Begun!

Mardi Gras Season Has Begun!

I have two videos that I would like to share… This song is done in variations from town to town… Sort of like a “different tribes” sort of thing. So the transition might not be 100% but it is probably a strong 80%… lol 🖤

They are both the same song but I personally prefer the “old” version… It sung in Cajun French, (UNFORTUNATELY I never learned to speak in my local dialect but I do know JUUUST a little bit). The second video is a nice informative piece, just sung with a new and more popular band.

La chanson de Mardi Gras de Basile

Mardi Gras Song

(Cajun French)

Capitaine:
Capitaine, capitaine,
voyage ton flag et hale ton camp.

Chorus:
Tout le tour autour du moyeu.

Capitaine:
La route est grande,
la nuit est longue,
et les belles sont pas invitées.*
C’est les Mardi Gras,
ça vient une fois par an
demander la charité.
Une fois par an,
c’est pas trop souvent
pour vous quand même.

Chorus:
C’est hip, c’est hip, c’est hop,
et mon cher de camarade.
C’est hip, c’est hip, c’est hop,
et mon cher de camarade.

Capitaine:
C’est les Mardi Gras
ça devient de loin,
ça devient de l’Angleterre.

Chorus:
Tout le tour autour du moyeu.

Capitaine:
C’est les Mardi Gras
c’est tout des bons jeunes gens,
Des bons jeunes gens ça
devient de bonnes familles.

Chorus:
Tout le tour autour du moyeu.

Capitaine:
C’est pas des malfecteurs.
C’est juste des chamondeurs.

Chorus:
C’est hip, c’est hip, c’est hop,
et mon cher de camarade.
C’est hip, c’est hip, c’est hop,
et mon cher de camarade.

Capitaine:
C’est les Mardi Gras,
ça demande à la maitresse,
À la maitresse pour
une petite poule grasse
et du riz ou de la graisse.

Chorus:
Tout le tour autour du moyeu.
Pour faire leur grand gumbo
ce soir à Grand Basile.

Chorus:
C’est hip, c’est hip, c’est hop,
et mon cher de camarade.
C’est hip, c’est hip, c’est hop,
et mon cher de camarade.

Capitaine:
Tu me promettrais ci,
tu me promettrais ça,
mais tu m’en donneras pas.

Chorus:
Tout le tour autour du moyeu.
C’est hip, c’est hip, c’est hop,
et mon cher de camarade.
C’est hip, c’est hip, c’est hop,
et mon cher de camarade.

Capitaine:
Capitaine, Capitaine
les sauvages ça
peut plus chanter à force
que leur gorge est sec.

Chorus:
Tout le tour autour du moyeu.

Capitaine:
Une bonne petite bière fraide**
les ferait chanter meilleur.

Chorus:
C’est hip, c’est hip, c’est hop,
et mon cher de camarade.
C’est hip, c’est hip, c’est hop,
et mon cher de camaradehttps://googleads.g.doubleclick.net/pagead/ads?client=ca-pub-0067450897101405&output=html&h=250&adk=3553869322&adf=3928401639&pi=t.aa~a.3607528662~rp.3&w=326&fwrn=7&fwrnh=100&lmt=1641592194&rafmt=1&to=qs&pwprc=7122770200&psa=0&format=326×250&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.mamalisa.com%2F%3Ft%3Des%26p%3D4754&flash=0&fwr=0&pra=3&rpe=1&resp_fmts=3&sfro=1&wgl=1&fa=40&uach=WyJBbmRyb2lkIiwiMTEuMC4wIiwiIiwiU00tTjk4NlUiLCI5Ni4wLjQ2NjQuMTA0IixbXSxudWxsLG51bGwsIiJd&dt=1641592194317&bpp=3&bdt=2402&idt=-M&shv=r20220104&mjsv=m202112060101&ptt=9&saldr=aa&abxe=1&cookie=ID%3Dc05389aa82ff6d6f-228b773d0bd00065%3AT%3D1641592194%3ART%3D1641592194%3AS%3DALNI_MYZPixwtnvmPJSkD9v_03LU29434w&prev_fmts=0x0%2C412x343&nras=2&correlator=2665774298252&rume=1&frm=20&pv=1&ga_vid=921354773.1641592193&ga_sid=1641592193&ga_hid=67301096&ga_fc=1&u_tz=-360&u_his=1&u_h=883&u_w=412&u_ah=883&u_aw=412&u_cd=24&u_sd=2.625&dmc=8&adx=37&ady=3685&biw=412&bih=753&scr_x=0&scr_y=165&eid=31063752%2C44753656%2C31061691%2C21067496%2C31061693&oid=2&pvsid=4417162988410144&pem=341&tmod=949&ref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2F&eae=0&fc=1920&brdim=0%2C0%2C0%2C0%2C412%2C0%2C412%2C753%2C412%2C753&vis=1&rsz=%7C%7Cs%7C&abl=NS&fu=128&bc=31&ifi=4&uci=a!4&btvi=1&fsb=1&xpc=T3AV20ZOAh&p=https%3A//www.mamalisa.com&dtd=59https://googleads.g.doubleclick.net/pagead/ads?client=ca-pub-0067450897101405&output=html&h=250&adk=3553869322&adf=1740258093&pi=t.aa~a.3218182550~rp.1&w=326&fwrn=7&fwrnh=100&lmt=1641592194&rafmt=1&to=qs&pwprc=7122770200&psa=0&format=326×250&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.mamalisa.com%2F%3Ft%3Des%26p%3D4754&flash=0&fwr=0&pra=3&rpe=1&resp_fmts=3&sfro=1&wgl=1&fa=40&uach=WyJBbmRyb2lkIiwiMTEuMC4wIiwiIiwiU00tTjk4NlUiLCI5Ni4wLjQ2NjQuMTA0IixbXSxudWxsLG51bGwsIiJd&dt=1641592194317&bpp=4&bdt=2401&idt=4&shv=r20220104&mjsv=m202112060101&ptt=9&saldr=aa&abxe=1&cookie=ID%3Dc05389aa82ff6d6f-228b773d0bd00065%3AT%3D1641592194%3ART%3D1641592194%3AS%3DALNI_MYZPixwtnvmPJSkD9v_03LU29434w&prev_fmts=0x0%2C412x343%2C326x250&nras=3&correlator=2665774298252&rume=1&frm=20&pv=1&ga_vid=921354773.1641592193&ga_sid=1641592193&ga_hid=67301096&ga_fc=1&u_tz=-360&u_his=1&u_h=883&u_w=412&u_ah=883&u_aw=412&u_cd=24&u_sd=2.625&dmc=8&adx=37&ady=3972&biw=412&bih=753&scr_x=0&scr_y=165&eid=31063752%2C44753656%2C31061691%2C21067496%2C31061693&oid=2&pvsid=4417162988410144&pem=341&tmod=949&ref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2F&eae=0&fc=1920&brdim=0%2C0%2C0%2C0%2C412%2C0%2C412%2C753%2C412%2C753&vis=1&rsz=%7C%7Cs%7C&abl=NS&fu=128&bc=31&ifi=5&uci=a!5&btvi=2&fsb=1&xpc=ZbXOb6X8ox&p=https%3A//www.mamalisa.com&dtd=74

The Mardi Gras Song of Basile

Mardi Gras Song

Captain:
Captain, captain,
Wave your flag and move your group along.

Chorus:
All round about the hub.

Captain:
The road is great,
the night is long,
and women aren’t invited.*
It’s Mardi Gras,
it just once a year
to ask for charity.
Once a year,
it’s not too often
for you anyway.

Chorus:
It’s hip, it’s hip, it’s hop,
and my dear fellow.
It’s hip, it’s hip, it’s hop,
and my dear fellow.

Captain:
It’s the Mardi Gras
It comes from far
It comes from England.

Chorus:
All round about the hub.

Captain:
It’s the Mardi Gras
It’s all the good young people,
The good young people that
Come from good families.

Chorus:
All round about the hub.

Captain:
They are not troublemakers.
They’re just beggars.

Chorus:
It’s hip, it’s hip, it’s hop,
and my dear fellow.
It’s hip, it’s hip, it’s hop,
and my dear fellow.

Captain:
The Mardi Gras
Asks the mistress,
The mistress for
a small fat hen
and rice or fat.

Chorus:
All round about the hub
To make their giant gumbo
tonight in Grand Basile.

Chorus:
It’s hip, it’s hip, it’s hop,
and my dear fellow.
It’s hip, it’s hip, it’s hop,
and my dear fellow.

Captain:
You would promise me this,
You would promise me that,
but you won’t give it to me.

Chorus:
All round about the hub.
It’s hip, it’s hip, it’s hop,
and my dear fellow.
It’s hip, it’s hip, it’s hop,
and my dear fellow.

Captain:
Captain, captain
The savages,
they can sing no longer
because their throat is dry.

Chorus:
All round about the hub.

Captain:
A good small cold beer
would make them sing better.

Chorus:
It’s hip, it’s hip, it’s hop,
and my dear fellow.
It’s hip, it’s hip, it’s hop,
and my dear fellow.
